BRISTOL — Pemaquid Art Gallery closed for the season Oct. 10, but before it does, is featuring members Gwendolyn Evans and Patti Leavitt.
They are both skilled in many painting mediums but are best known at the gallery for Evans’ work in watercolor and Leavitt’s work in pastel.
Leavitt has been a Gallery member for nearly 15 years, known for her detailed, richly colored, realistic and atmospheric pastels featuring farm scenes, coastal villages, seascapes, woodlands as well as still life and portraiture. Her traditional views take on a modern mood through their strong colors and stark forms, leading to a comparison with Edward Hopper’s still, isolated moods.
Leavitt, of Bristol and Bonita Springs, Florida, was born into a family of artists and has always created art. She moved to Maine with her family about 40 years ago and has studied with many fine pastel artists and oil painters. She has been very active in the local art community in Florida and has been a member of pastel societies both in Maine and Southwest Florida, where she has won numerous awards for her paintings.

Evans has created and exhibited her art for decades at the 35 places she has called home. With an MA from Rhode Island School of Design, and many workshops with well-known artists, she has exhibited in more than 100 juried, regional, national and international shows, receiving numerous awards. She has taught art in a variety of schools and public studio/galleries. She currently offers workshops in watercolor, pastel, drawing, portraiture/figure at her gallery/studio in Walpole. Besides making visual art, Evans has many other creative focuses, including writing inspirational articles, poetry, women’s studies, writing a cookbook, gardening and a life-long interest in spirituality.
