AUGUSTA — Last year, organizers, Mike and Lina Michaud, past exalted rulers of Augusta Elks Lodge 964, came up with the idea to host a fun-filled camping weekend in Western Maine to support its major state project — the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
With just more than 130 Elks traveling across Maine to join in the fun at The Forks in Somerset County; the event collectively raised more than $18,500, with 12 out of the state’s 20 Elks lodges on board. The festivities, consisted of a pig roast/chicken BBQ, corn hole tournaments, wine and cheese tasting, karaoke, dancing, silent auctions/raffles and scrumptious meals planned by the various lodges.
After a successful first year, organizers met with the Maine Elks Association’s state MCCP chairperson, Mike Desjardins, to make it an annual event.
This year lodge members kicked off the second annual MCCP/FORKS Weekend Aug. 25 to 28. More than 200 Elks participated, representing 17 lodges. The efforts from the events raised more than $45,500.
Plans are already in motion for the third annual MCCP/FORKS weekend to be held Aug. 24-27, 2023.
