A safe and sober Fourth of July: Tips from Somerset Public Health

SKOWHEGAN – This July 4, as we celebrate America’s independence, Somerset Public Health and the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are reminding drivers that “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.”
Unfortunately, too many people think that driving after a few drinks is acceptable. The numbers say otherwise: In 2020, more than 200 people in the U.S. were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes over the Fourth of July holiday period. Stay safe for the people in your life — drive sober to protect them and to protect yourself.
Tips for a safe Independence Day weekend:
• Remember that it is never OK to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.
• If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact Skowhegan Police Department or Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.
• See a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.
