Native American Maine artists sought for mural project

Apr. 242022

MADISON — Wesserunsett Arts Council and Four Directions Development Corp. have launched an open call for proposals for a mural in Madison.
The deadline is June 15 and is open to only Native American artists residing in Maine.
Artists are invited to design the scope and size of the painting based on the available budget of $6,500; $1,000 will pay for installation. The project is funded by a $7,500 grant from the Maine Humanities Council.
The site for the mural will be the exterior of 108 Old Point Ave. Maine. Originally a school, the building is owned by the town and leases space to nonprofit organizations. There is a playground adjacent to the mural site.
The intent of the project is to broaden people’s understanding of history and increase the vibrance of Madison. Public art is a catalyst for enhancing a sense of place and for building new understandings and connections across communities.
The project plans to commission the mural in June, to be completed and installed in the fall.
“We’re excited to be able to inject this kind of investment into Maine’s creative economy,” said project coordinator Saskia Reinholt.
Charlene Virgilio, Four Directions executive director said, “The project with WesArts is very timely for Four Directions. This engagement comes as we launch our new Artisan’s Fund program to support Wabanaki artists and craftspeople.”
The full call for proposals can be viewed www.wesarts.org/nativemural.
Four Directions Development Corporation is a nonprofit Community Development Corporation and Native Community Development Financial Institution certified by the U.S. Department of Treasury. Their mission is to improve the social and economic conditions of the Penobscot, Maliseet, Mi’kmaq and Passamaquoddy tribes in Maine through education and investment in affordable housing, tribal business ventures, and Native entrepreneurship. Wesserunsett Arts Council is a nonprofit organization and is Somerset County’s only regional arts council.
