SKOWHEGAN — The GFWC Skowhegan Women’s Club is delivering homemade apple pies and spring bulbs fresh from Holland this fall to raise money for community programs.
The pies and bulbs must be pre-ordered no later than Friday, Sept. 24, to be ready in time for pick up from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 2, from the porch of the Redington Memorial Home, 11 North Ave.
The club is a nonprofit association dedicated to improving the community. The Skowhegan chapter is the oldest General Federation of Women’s Clubs chapter in Maine. Money raised will allow the club to help other agencies within the Skowhegan area. GFWC Skowhegan has given two annual scholarships of $500 to high school seniors, donated clothing to the Newborns in Need Program of Somerset County, filled a bucket with household supplies for veterans in the Augusta area moving into new homes, donated money and clothing to two area shelters, financially assisted the Skowhegan Free Public Library and the Skowhegan History House among others. The club has also sold baked goods to raise money at the Concerts in the Park at Coburn Park and Run of the River Festivities.
GFWC Skowhegan has also conducted free crafting sessions at the library in the winter with programs like cake decorating, card embroidery and stained glass.
The choice of bulbs include tulips in lemon yellow, cherry red and ivory white or Narcissus, Ceylon. Directions for planting the bulbs this fall will be included. To order a pie or bulbs, call club members Deb Burnham, at 207-858-3320 or Sue Ellen Lexier at 207-431-4786, or other club members.
The club meets during the year monthly to discuss our work and to also foster and strengthen relationships among Skowhegan women. The club is open to any women in the area who would like to join.
