Skowhegan Community Refrigerator allows folks to take what they need, and give too

SKOWHEGAN — Those in Skowhegan with food insecurity have another place to access free food thanks to the work of one woman and helpers. The Community Refrigerator is set up to accept food items from the public so that people in need can take basic items to boost their pantries.
Maureen Davis, with the help of Patsy Miller and others, provided and set up a refrigerator to offer food to people in need. Inspired by a story on NPR and wanting to support those with food insecurities, Davis and Miller requested permission from the Skowhegan Regional Chamber of Commerce, which agreed to place the unit and bring the proposal to the town’s Board of Selectmen.
The refrigerator has been just outside the Chamber of Commerce building, 24 Commercial St., since mid-January.
Stocked initially by members of Davis’ and Miller’s book club, now other members of the public are also offering eggs, fresh produce, fresh fruit, meat, chicken, fish, milk and other basic products. The refrigerator is continually being restocked.
Everyone is invited to visit this community resource — take what you need, offer what you can.
