HALLOWELL — On Veterans Day, Scouts from Waterville, Sidney and Winslow marched in the Veterans Day Parade in Waterville. But in Hallowell, because of COVID-19 restrictions, Scouts had to come up with a different way to thank those who served.
Troop 647 in Hallowell-Farmingdale typically cooks and serves a free breakfast for veterans each year on Veterans Day, at the Goodrich-Caldwell American Legion Post 6, and usually serve more than 100 veterans ayear.
The troop (and some extra parents) raise all the money, gather donations, organize, cook, serve and clean up. This is the first time in more than 10 years that breakfast has not been provided. Both the Scouts and the veterans were very disappointed.
But Scouts always find a way to solve a problem.
“In lieu of breakfast this year, we had the Scouts write letters and we sent cards to all the Wprld War II veterans that are members of American Legion Post 6,” said Scoutmaster Glen Glidden. “Troop 647 Scouts keep the Legion post walkways shoveled, sanded, and salted each winter so that the veterans always have safe and easy access to the post building. Our Scout troop assists local veterans placing small U.S. flags on all the veterans graves in the Hallowell cemetery each year as well as gathering them up in the fall, cleaning, drying, and storing them for the winter. We also assist with fundraising to help purchase replacement flags. Twice a year we assist local veteran groups in performing U.S. flag retirement ceremonies.”
