AUGUSTA — Absentee ballots in Maine should be mailed back ASAP in order for them to be postmarked by election day, the U.S. Post Office officials and the Maine Secretary of State’s office recommend.
Voters are encouraged to mail them back back by Tuesday, Oct. 27, to ensure they get there on time. Many communities also have drop boxes for ballots. Call your town office or city hall for more information. Voters can only use a drop box for their own community and cannot use a drop box in a municipality where they do not live. They can also hand in their ballot in person in their town or city office.
Here are some facts to remember:
* The statewide deadline to request an absentee ballot is close of business Thursday, Oct. 29. Voters can call their town office to have a ballot mailed to their home or can pick one up to take home for themselves or a member of their immediate family. Voters can also order a ballot online at the state’s website at www.maine.gov/sos
* The statewide deadline to vote an in-person absentee ballot at the voter’s town office/city hall is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
* Voters cannot cast an absentee ballot at their municipal office on Monday or Tuesday (Nov. 2 and 3) unless they have an unforeseen medical issue or other unexpected situation as per state law.
* The statewide deadline to return an absentee ballot to their municipal clerk is 8 p.m. on election night, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
* Per the Secretary of State’s Office, if voters have requested an absentee ballot, they have committed to vote the ballot that was mailed to them. The municipal clerk cannot provide a second ballot unless the voter has spoiled the ballot or their requested ballot does not arrive.
