Tuesday, Sept. 22, is National Voter Registration Day, and many local town offices are encouraging residents to find out about registering to vote and this year’s voting process.

With a historic presidential election approaching, residents who are interested in voting should be sure they are registered to vote. Communities across the country are planning to use National Voter Registration Day to remind residents to take care of this task well in advance of election day,.
In Maine, given the COVID-19 related capacity limits at the polling place buildings statewide, cities and towns are encouraging their residents this year to not wait until election day to register. While this service will be available at the polls, it is recommended that voters consider registering to vote at their town office/city hall during the month of September instead. Due to the pandemic, the polling places will have a limited capacity of people at any one time, so any services that can be done in advance of election should be, if possible. Voter registration can be done at the municipal clerk’s offices year-round.
Voter registration can also be conducted via the mail up through Oct. 19 this year.
Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their the right to vote.
