University of New England dental students and support staff will partner with the Maine Dental Association to offer free dental care to those who cannot afford treatment and do not have insurance on Friday, Nov. 1, as part of Dentists Who Care for ME.
“Part of UNE’s mission is to better the health of people in northern New England,” said Fields Farrior, associate dean of clinical education and patient care at UNE. “Giving back is foundational to that mission.”
UNE dental students will volunteer their time, providing teeth cleanings, fillings and extractions, under the supervision of faculty members at the UNE Oral Health Center, 750 Stevens Ave.. Portland. Patients will be seen between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis and registrations will not be taken.
UNE is partnering with the Maine Dental Association for the statewide event.
“It’s a humbling experience for all the student providers,” says Kimberly Soulard, UNE College of Dental Medicine’s assistant director of Clinical Affairs. “When they give free treatment to those in need and then see how grateful the patients are, it’s a great experience for them.”
Dentists Who Care for ME has helped more than 4,000 patients and provided services valued at over $1.3 million since its inception.
