WATERVILLE — KV Connect kicked off a food gleaning project Oct. 16 — World Food Day — with the intent to give back to the community and get others involved with community service.
Food gleaning refers to the collection of excess fresh foods and providing it to those in need. The initiative will take Colby College’s Take Four café leftovers to the Universalist Unitarian Church of Waterville to give to community members who visit for the “Evening Sandwich Program.” With the help of Fran Mullen at Healthy Northern Kennebec, fostering this new program and partnership enables young professionals to work together to reduce food waste and increase access to healthy food.
“This partnership effort is a great way to capitalize 15 minutes of your day and make a true impact on our community,” said Molly Woodward, KVConnect board chairwoman “It’s something so simple, but it makes a huge impact on community members who are in need of nutritious food that’s not just good but good for them. The generosity is all thanks to Colby College — all we need to do is get the food to the church.”
To implement the program, the KV Connect Food Distribution group is looking for volunteers on Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:30 p.m. Volunteers will meet at Colby’s Take Four Café to pick up leftovers and deliver them to the church.
