Many of Maine’s hundreds of licensed acupuncturists will offer the public an opportunity to experience acupuncture and learn more about its vital role in healthcare reform on National Acupuncture Day — Thursday, Oct. 24.
These professionals will open the doors of their clinics, offer free treatments and demonstrations of their skills and give public lectures in communities statewide.
“As acupuncturists, we help your friends and neighbors to feel their best every day,” said Mary Beth Hassett, president of the Maine Association of Acupuncturists and Oriental Medicine. “We are getting more and more recognition for these great outcomes at a fraction of the cost of other interventions, but many people still have questions about how we do it. Our events will showcase acupuncture and the many other tools in our toolboxes: body work; nutrition and lifestyle counseling; and sophisticated, personalized herbal medications.”
Licensed acupuncturists are healthcare professionals who support the body’s natural tendency to self regulate and self heal. Using traditional Asian medicine techniques developed and refined thousands of years ago, they continue to provide high quality affordable health care in Maine and world-wide. As the World Health Organization states, “In [acupuncture’s] 2500 years of development, a wealth of experience has been accumulated, attesting to the wide range of diseases and conditions that can effectively be treated with its approach.”
“Before I came to my first acupuncture visit I was very skeptical… but how I feel now compared with how I felt before, it is a 100% difference,” said veteran Dexter Gagne. “The other doctors I see have commented on how much better I am doing, too, and I feel so much better. If I can just convince even one person to come [try acupuncture], I will be happy,.”

The Maine Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is a nonprofit organization that serves professional acupuncturists, as well as patients and members of the public who wish to learn more about acupuncture for treatment and as a potential profession.
