PORTLAND — The Fund for Maine Land Conservation of the Maine Community Foundation seeks grant proposals to support land preservation. Proposals for funding will be accepted from Maine-based land trusts, other nonprofit organizations and governmental entities for projects to conserve land or provide watershed protection.
Goals of the grant program are to help preserve traditional land uses and public access, protect sensitive ecological areas, promote greater appreciation of the environment, and provide for new or continued public access to Maine’s special places. Grants are available for both projects and organizational development.
The deadline for applications is October 15, 2018. The online application is available at www.mainecf.org.
Last year, the Fund for Maine Land Conservation distributed over $77,000 in grants. The 13 grants ranged in size from $1,000 to $7,500. The maximum grant size for the program has been increased to $10,000 this year.
Grantees included:
* Maine Island Trail Association, to ensure that more youth can experience and care for Maine’s wild islands * Southern Maine Conservation Collaborative, to build board capacity and increase the organization’s impact through its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Project * Snow Pond Messalonskee Lake Association, to expand conservation efforts in Messalonskee Marsh with burlap benthic (bottom) barriers and manual harvesting of invasive aquatic species * The Conservation Fund, to coordinate partnerships with five organizations to protect 18,840 acres for wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities and economic development for communities of Hancock and Washington counties.
