HANOVER — Pam Lyons of Rumford has been rock hounding for more than 20 years. Her love of the beauty of nature in its many forms is what keeps her going back for more.
Her digs in the quarries and mines of Maine have yielded some amazing specimens.
Now Lyons is sharing her beloved finds in her recently-installed rock garden at the entrance to Stony Brook Variety, 3036 Main St., U.S. Route 2.
“It’s like a treasure hunt,” says Lyons. “Sometimes you start a dig and think ‘there’s nothing here,’ and then sometimes the rewards are simply jaw-dropping, mind-boggling!”
She does is for “the thrill of it” and for her love of the mountains, birds and nature. The rock garden at Stony Brook is lined with books of mica and topped with a display of rocks and minerals native to western, southern and coastal Maine.
You will find watermelon, green, blue and pink tourmaline; smoky, rose and clear quartz; lepidolite and clear quartz crystals. As a child, Lyons says she was too busy with sports to pay much attention to the mountains, but her brother John, a geologist, eventually got her interested in rock hounding, and she’s been hooked ever since.
