RUMFORD — Ninety-eight year old Marjorie (Fish) Puiia was recently presented with the Boston Post cane as Rumford’s oldest resident.
The Rumford cane, which had been lost since 1987, had not been presented for over 30 years, but was recently found and repaired — and so the tradition continues.
Family, friends and residents gathered at Rumford Community Home where Puiia resides to celebrate. The cane and plaque were presented by Rumford Selectman Peter Chase. Puiia smiled and proudly held the cane for all to see. She received flowers, a plaque and a beautifully decorated cake which was enjoyed at the celebration which followed.
Puiia was born in Bath, Maine and eventually settled in Rumford. She attended Gould Academy and married Eugene Puiia. She has four sons, Larry, Barry, Wayne and Greg Puiia and one daughter, Dolly (Puiia) Colton.
Puiia also has roots in Hanover where her mother and stepfather built a camp on Howard Pond.
