BRUNSWICK — Feminist scholar Valentine Moghadam of Northeastern University will speak about “Yemen: Time to End Its Suffering,” 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St.
The event is co-sponsored by PeaceWorks, Global Network, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom-Maine Chapter and Peace Action Maine.
The public is invited and the event is free. Time for questions will be allotted at the end of the program.
Born in Tehran, Moghadam studied in Canada and the U.S. She is professor of sociology and director of the International Affairs Program. Her book “Modernizing Women: Gender and Social Change in the Middle East” (recognized as a Choice Outstanding Academic Book) is described as “an indispensable contribution to our understanding of current popular struggles for modernity, democratization, and meaningful citizenship.” Additionally, she has aided in the establishment of the Palestinian Women’s Research and Documentation Center, located in Ramallah. She heads up Massachusetts Peace Action’s Middle East Working Group. Michelle Cuhna, assistant director of Massachusetts Peace Action, will make comments and introduction.
