Free manufacturing training begins in Brunswick April 3

BRUNSWICK — Southern Maine Community College, the Maine Community College System’s Maine Quality Centers program, and the Maine Department of Labor’s CareerCenters are partnering with General Dynamics Bath Iron Works to deliver no-cost technical training to provide the skilled workers BIW needs to help fill critical jobs, beginning April 3.
Classes are 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and run until June 28 at SMCC’s Midcoast Campus, 29 Sewall St.

The Manufacturing Technician Training Course offers students an opportunity to learn trade-related skills to begin a career in shipfitting, pipefitting or the general trades. Topics will include blueprint reading, technical math, hand and power tool operation and safety, operation of air tools, oxy cutting, tack welding, basic layout, lifting and material handling, drilling, fastening and more. BIW will conduct job interviews with qualified applicants upon successful completion of the program. Those who are hired will receive additional, job-specific training in the shipyard’s Trades Learning Center.
The training is a grant-funded opportunity. Eligibility requirements include being a resident of Maine, holding a high school diploma, GED or HiSet, being unemployed or underemployed, and proof of authorization to work in the U.S. Preference is given to those with previous trade experience or training. Other testing may be required.
