NEWRY — More than 400 Maine Adaptive students, volunteers and community members will gather on the slopes of Sunday River Saturday, March 24 for the annual Ski-A-Thon.
The event celebrates the accomplishments and success stories of disabled athletes of all ages who participate in year-round adaptive sports.
Maine Adaptive provides adaptive lessons in alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, paddling, cycling, tennis, golf, rock climbing, hiking and fishing.
The Ski-A-Thon, in its 33rd year, raises money to provide equipment and programming to nearly 500 adults and children annually.
The day-long event is also introduction to an adaptive program and gives people who aren’t familiar with it a chance to see the joy and freedom that the community enables, organizers said.
One of the largest single-day nonprofit events in the state, the Ski-A-Thon engages groups of five who commit to supporting Maine Adaptive by securing donations and pledges. The money each team member raises help to support access, equipment and volunteer training, giving Mainers and visitors with disabilities options for healthy outdoor fun and learning throughout our beautiful state.
This year’s theme, Sun Splash, recognizes that the Ski-A-Thon, Maine Adaptive’s annual celebration of its winter season, also serves to kick-off its summer programming.
