Waterville Public Library March events include art, reading dogs

WATERVILLE — The Waterville Public Library, 73 Elm St., will be offering several programs in March.
“What’s it like to visit an Art Museum?” will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, when the storytelling team from Colby College Museum of Art will bring a mini art gallery to the children’s department at the library.

Children will learn what it is like to visit a museum, have the opportunity to look at some pieces from the museum’s collection, and take home a craft to make their own frames. Especially for kids 3 and older and their grownups.
Story time with Ashley Bryan — a celebration of art — will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 21.
A tremendous influence in the world of art and children’s literature, Bryan is a 94-year-old award-winning artist, revered author/illustrator of more than 50 children’s books, and maker of magical puppets and sea glass windows from found objects inspired by his African heritage. He has used art his entire life to celebrate joy, mediate the darkness of war and racism, explore the mysteries of faith and create loving community. Health permitting, Bryan will be reading two of his favorite books — “Beautiful Blackbird” and “Can’t Scare Me!”
Tea and light refreshments will be provided and a few copies of his books will be given away. This event is free and open to the public. Following this event, there will be a special screening at 7:30 p.m. of “I Know a Man… Ashley Bryan” and a Q&A with director Richard Kane at Railroad Square Cinemas, 17 Railroad Square.
Also in March, the “Reader Dogs” return. Therapy dog friends from Kennebec Valley Love on a Leash will be in the children’s department from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 for read-aloud time.
The program has proven to be great for kids who want to practice their reading skills and for families who want a fun, calming, read-aloud opportunity. Children man bring their own favorite book or borrow one from the library.
