BUSINESS PROFILE: Brunswick Naval Museum, Memorial Gardens carry legacy forward

BRUNSWICK — From its ground-breaking in 1942 until the government mandated closing on May 31, 2011, the purpose and mission of the Brunswick Naval Air Station was to provide relentless vigilance to guard and protect the United States.
Tens of thousands of airmen and women served here along with countless civilians who all made NASB operational — and made Brunswick what it is today.
It is important to preserve this unique and rarely told story of American history while we have this opportunity. For that reason the nonprofit Brunswick Naval Museum and Memorial Gardens was established in 2009. In recent years, it bought the former NASB chapel that housed the memorial gardens, and offers 13,600 square feet to mount permanent and rotating exhibits, to present hands-on educational programs to school children and adults, to conduct research activities and to house an archives, library and curatorial spaces. A sophisticated flight simulator using five wide monitor screens is a special interactive exhibit and feature of the museum.
The Brunswick Naval Museum and Memorial Gardens is at 179 Admiral Fitch Avenue on the former Naval Air Station property, now Brunswick Landing.The museum is open year round and visitors are invited to visit the museum Wednesdays from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. It houses a largely photographic exhibit of the history of the naval air station, the flight simulator, as well as many artifacts and a lot of information about the naval a patrol and base operations.
It also maintains the Friendship and Memorial Gardens, preserving the memories of airmen who lost their lives in service to their country, and community members who worked on the base.
