Luella M. Norton
1927-2018
NORWAY — Luella M. Norton, 90, of Jay, formerly of Livermore, went to join her beloved husband Mason, Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Feb. 21, 1927, in York Village, the daughter of Howard O. Taylor and Doris M. (Grant) Taylor. She attended Bryant Pond School in Woodstock, leaving before graduation to go to work to help her family.
Luella worked as an assembler at Norwalk Shoe in North Jay for 30 years and also at Shapiro Brothers Shoe Co. in Auburn. Luella was also known by the nickname Blondie.
On July 17, 1969, she married Mason Norton, and they made their home on Norton Road in Livermore. Luella loved the farm life and touring the Maine Fairs with Mason participating in the Oxen Pulls. Mason passed away Sept. 14, 2015, after 46 years of marriage.
She was an avid “beano” player and also enjoyed “junk-in” (finding/selling antiques and collectibles) at the flea market on Cottage Street in Norway. She had a green thumb for exotic plants and adored her two cats– Babe and Tommy.
She is survived by her daughter, Juanita Jordan of Livermore; her son, Carroll Gillespie and wife Christina of Brownfield; two grandsons, Brad Jordan of Livermore and Mark Gillespie and wife Cindy of Norridgewock; three great-grandchildren, Deliliah Jordan, Collin Gillespie and Roseanna Binette; two great-great grandchildren, Carter Binette and Lila Gillespie; a nephew, Don Carter and wife Wanda of Surry and their family; as well as legions of other relatives and beloved friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Mason, sister Bernice (Taylor) Carter, and a daughter, Daisy May.
The family also would like to extend a special heartfelt thanks to Dr. David J Kumaki of Western Maine Primary Care for his many years of outstanding and compassionate health care service, the loving and devoted staff at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Elder Independence Maine, Seniors Plus, Meals on Wheels, Home Care for Maine, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, Madison Avenue Associates, and all the amazing friends who helped, with her wish, to live independently at home.
