Adaptive athletes to speak at Mahoosuc Land Trusts ‘Day in the Life’ series

BETHEL — Members of the Maine Adaptive Alpine Race Team will present “A Day in the Life of an Adaptive Athlete” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17 at McLaughlin Auditorium.
The presentation is the first in the Mahoosuc Land Trust’s 2018 speaker series, “A Day in the Life.” Future months will feature a snow ranger, an ocean swimmer, a dog-sledder, and a tiny-house-builder and more.

The Maine team consists of 13 athletes who have impairment challenges and seven volunteer race coaches.

Since 2000, the team has competed regionally against other adaptive ski teams in the Diana Golden Race Series, including travel Lake Placid for the Empire State Winter Games.

The team also supports individual members in their goal of national and international competition. They have helped put three athletes onto the U.S. National Paralympic Alpine Team to compete at the Paralympic Winter Games.

A lot of work and dedication goes into training and competing. The presentation will help explain the process of becoming an adaptive athlete, from the first race to Paralympic level competition.
