SKOWHEGAN — The Skowhegan Community Chorus begins its spring 2018 rehearsals next month and is looking for members.
The first rehearsal is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at the Centenary United Methodist Church, Dr. Mann Road. The chorus represents much of Somerset County, with about 25 members from Bingham, Madison, Anson, Starks, Harmony and Norridgewock, as well as Skowhegan. There are no auditions required to join, just the willingness and commitment to come to rehearsals and to practice some on your own.
Director Kenneth Martin, of Skowhegan, has a masters degree in music from the University of Maryland and has been directing the chorus since 2012.
The chorus sings a wide variety of songs, from those with driving rhythms, to songs about peace, love ballads, folk songs, popular songs and more, most written in the past 20 or 30 years, but sometimes from the classical, romantic or renaissance periods. The main goal is songs that are fun to do and sound beautiful. The chorus usually stays away from long involved works of art like cantatas, operettas or masses.
“Joining the chorus is making a commitment to a team,” said a news release. “While we don’t keep attendance, missing rehearsals is not a good idea. A large part of being in a chorus is learning to sing the song together, and missing even one rehearsal can make it harder for everyone else to ‘catch you up.'”
Rehearsals are every Monday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and it usually performs three concerts each season.
There is a $20 fee to join and singers should be at least 14. Boys’ voices should have deepened so they can sing appropriate lower parts (either tenor or bass).
