Sen. Paul Davis, R-Piscataquis, and Sen. Scott Cyrway, R-Somerset, joined retired Maine State Police troopers Mark Nickerson, Seth Allen, Tyler Harrington and Lt. Jackie Theriault at Brown Cemetery in Benton Dec. 11 to visit the grave of Trooper Thomas J. Merry, who died in the line of duty in July of 1980 in Palmyra. Davis and Cyrway, are retired law enforcement officers who served at the time Merry was killed. Cyrway was a classmate of Merry’s and Davis was one of the first responders on the evening of the incident. Merry was killed when he was struck by a suspect’s vehicle as he was setting up a roadblock. The senators said that in visiting Merry’s grave, they are reminded that, even in a safe place like Maine, law enforcement can be a dangerous line of work, and that officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the state’s residents.
