YORK — A stuff-the-bus event is planned Saturday to benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, in memory of two girls, including one from Bethel, who died of cancer earlier this year.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Fisherman’s Dock, and participants are asked to bring unwrapped toys, electronics, crafts, games, puzzles and gift cards to be distributed to children with cancer during the holidays.
The event will also feature raffles from local restaurants, breweries and golf courses as well as a silent auction. This annual event is planned by town resident Liz Caramihalis.
All toys and money collected will be delivered to the MCCP clinic in Scarborough on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. in memory of 4-year-old Madeline Marzen, of Bath, and 10-year-old Hailey Steward, of Bethel. Marzen died in October and Steward died in September. Friends of Marzen will help “unstuff” the bus on Monday morning in memory of their friend, and many will also bring their own donations, according to a news release about the event.
“We are so humbled that Madeline and Hailey will be remembered with this event,” said Amie Marzen, Madeline’s mother. “The Maine Children’s Cancer Program has become family to us, and no child fights alone- their fight is our fight. When Madeline’s friends heard about this event, many were inspired to use their own allowances to help stuff the bus in memory of their friend. They’re really looking forward to giving back to such a great cause and help other kids just like themselves.”
