WASHINGTON, D.C. — Maine’s U.S. senators, Susan Collins and Angus King, recently announced the Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating Saturday, Dec. 16, as “Wreaths Across America Day.”
A convoy of volunteers is scheduled to arrive that day at Arlington National Cemetery to lay Maine-made balsam wreaths at the grave site of American veterans interred there.
“In its 26-year history, Wreaths Across America has become an enduring symbol of valor and sacrifice, and reaffirms our never-ending obligation to thank those who served in defense of our nation,” said Collins and King in a joint statement.
“This Maine-led tradition is an inspiring example of the generosity and gratitude to our nation’s veterans that makes the holiday season so special. We are grateful for the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who ‘Remember, Honor, Teach’ through Wreaths Across America.”
Wreaths will be laid at the graves of American service members as part of a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to Arlington National Cemetery, wreaths will be laid at more than 1,200 other locations across the country and at numerous national veterans cemeteries on foreign soil.
Patriot Guard Riders will once again continue their tradition of escorting the wreath trucks from Maine down the East Coast, along with other patriotic escorts including motorcycle units, law enforcement, and first responders. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers are expected to participate in this proud tradition.
