RUMFORD — The Greater Rumford Area Ministers Pantry Service is celebrating its 25th year in the region, and those behind the effort hope the community will keep it in mind as during the holiday season.
“In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we are asking peole to take time to remember this worthwhile program that helps make our community a special place to live,” the organization said in a news release.
GRAMPS began in 1992, and over the years it has fed thousands of people at the Mexico Town Hall, where a luncheon is served at 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday. Between 35 and 50 people are fed lunch free of charge, and 43 take-out meals are delivered to shut-ins, each and every week.
Much of the food is donated by Hannaford supermarkets, government programs or is bought locally, and from the Good Shepherd Food Bank. All of the people who work at GRAMPS, from the cooks, kitchen helpers, wait staff and general helpers are volunteers. Whatever supplies are needed — coffee, condiments, food — and the monthly rental fee for the hall, is paid for with donations from individuals and various organizations.
Although lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., the doors are open at 10:30 a.m. for people to come and socialize. All are welcome.
