WATERVILLE — Albert S. Hall School celebrated Junior Writer’s Day Nov. 3, using the event to kick off a year of writing for students.
Preparation for the day included teachers reading a school-wide collection of poetry by Paul Janeczko, “Firefly July: A Year of Very Short Poems.”
Every student in the school posted a piece of writing, and students from Colby College’s Farnham Writer’s Center participated by writing compliments on each of the 240 works.
Art students created special thank-you notes in honor of the authors. The day of the event, the school welcomed five Maine authors, Paul Janeczko, Tamra Wight, Jennifer Richard Jacobson, Ben Bishop and Lynn Plourde. These authors presented either mini-sessions to small groups of students, or a whole school session. The students were able to attend several sessions throughout the day, and use the sessions for writing inspiration.
Each student received a blank writing notebook and a blank graphic novel style book, to use to experiment with ideas. Students also wrote special thank-you notes to the authors following the event.
Staff members also worked on a Penny Quote Project, an idea adapted from the author Amy Krouse Rosenthal, who once left pennies with quotes in random areas for others to find. Staff members turned in quotes, which were then printed and individually wrapped with 500 pennies.
The pennies were given out as a memento to students, presenters, teachers and Colby College students.
