Meet the Turner Publishing mascot, our news hound

Nov. 92017

TURNER – Back in the late 1990s, Turner Publishing, Inc. ran a contest asking readers to submit drawings of a potential mascot for the publishing company. Lawrence Stevens, of Greene, entered the contest with his drawing of a news hound. Recently, Lawrence was asked what inspired him to draw that particular dog. He replied, “It came to me out of the blue.”

The dog was unnamed for many years. A few employees called it Gordon for a while; others thought TP might be a good name. More recently, employees were using the mascot on a column titled, “What’s the scoop? Ask Coop.”

Stevens said that when members of his family see TPI’s mascot, they say to him, “Saw your dog today.”
