WATERVILLE –The Waterville Opera House will present “Calendar Girls,” a comedic play written by Tim Firth and Juliette Towhidi, which opens 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15.
The play, which was the fastest selling play in British theater history, according to a news release from the opera house, will run through Sunday, Sept. 24. It will “feature some of our community’s most talented actresses and actors,” and a portion of each ticket sold will be donated to the Harold Alfond Cancer Center.
In the play, Annie’s husband, Joh,n dies of leukemia, and she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for new furniture in the local hospital waiting room by posing nude for an “alternative” calendar with fellow members of the Women’s Institute. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descends on the small village. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their newfound fame. Based on the true story of 11 women who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, “Calendar Girls” contains tasteful nudity, according to the news release.
