WATERVILLE — Cirque du Geek 2017, a multi-genre geek convention at the Waterville Public Library will celebrate “the weird and wonderful worlds of cosplay, video games, anime, comic books, and all things geek” from Sept. 8 through 10.
Cirque du Geek’s events start at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, and continue through Sunday, Sept. 10. Events include a cosplay contest, an open video game room, fascinating panels with special guest Q&As, and a variety of other programming held in conjunction with Cirque du Geek, including a screening of the film “Ghostbusters” at Railroad Square Cinema.
Registration for Cirque du Geek is free, as are all events inside the library. Events are open to all ages unless otherwise marked. The full event schedule can be found at facebook.com/CirqueDuGeekCon.
In addition to the event schedule, several special programs will be featured, including:
A panel featuring Hannah Telle and Jeff Kline will be presented at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 at the Waterville Opera House. Kline is a writer and showrunner responsible for more than 40 animated and live-action series, specials, and pilots. Telle is an actress and singer/songwriter, best known for her role as Max Caulfield in the video game “Life is Strange.” The panel is free and open to the public.
A cosplay dance with visiting DJ, Mick Pratt will be held at the Opera House at 8 p.m. Sept. 8. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Refreshments will be provided. The dance is open to all ages, but attendees ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult. This event is free and open to the public.
At 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Railroad Square Cinema, the original “Ghostbusters,” will be shown. Visit www.railroadsquarecinema.com for details. The Maine Ghostbusters will attend the screening.
Common Street Arts, 93 Main St., is hosting costume crafting tutorial workshops in conjunction with Cirque du Geek to help attendees craft the perfect look for the cosplay contest well in advance of the weekend festivities.
A cosplay armor and prop making workshop will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, at Common Street Arts. The workshop is a hands-on experience where participants can learn the rudiments of working with each of the materials covered. Registration is required.
