FAIRFIELD — The L.C. Bates museum will offer Earth and space activities, as well as solar eclipse viewing, from noon until 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 21.
The eclipse begins at 1:30 p.m., is at maximum at 2:45 and ends at 3:55. It will last two hours and 26 minutes. The museum will provide free safe solar viewing glasses, as well as activities that include a model of how the eclipse works.
Partial solar eclipses happen when the moon comes between the sun and Earth, but the moon only partially covers the sun’s disk. During a partial solar eclipse, the moon, the sun and Earth don’t align in a perfectly straight line, and the moon casts only the outer part of its shadow, the penumbra on the Earth. The eclipse isn’t total in Maine, but will look like the moon has taken a bite out of the sun.
The museum will also live stream the eclipse.
