PORTLAND – Judy Vardamis, of Auburn, has joined the American Red Cross of Maine’s development team as a major gift officer, the organization announced.

Vardamis brings a wealth of business, economic development and non-profit sector experience to the position, the Red Cross said in a news release. A longtime Red Cross volunteer, Vardamis has served on the Board of Directors of the Bangor chapter and the Central and Mid Coast Chapter. She was also on the philanthropy committee of the Central and Mid Coast Chapter.

“I’ve volunteered with the Red Cross for years and served on various committees,” Vardamis said. “It does my heart good to serve in this role of major gift officer and see up close the compassion of the volunteers and hard work of the staff every day. It’s a genuine privilege to work with our donors whose generosity enables the Red Cross to fulfill its mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies.”

Vardamis has been a civic leader in the Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn areas. She was the executive director of both the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Bangor and Keep Bangor Beautiful/Bangor Garden Show. She has also been a corporate sales officer with the Maine Public Broadcasting Network and a community outreach coordinator at Electricity Maine. She is the board secretary for both the Center for Wisdom’s Women, adrop-in center in Lewiston and Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, and past chairwoman of L/A Arts, also in Lewiston.

Vardamis resides in Auburn with her husband, her dog, Jack, and two kitties. In her spare time she enjoys baking cookies and bread, reading and gardening.
