GRAY — Everyone is invited to join a local district forest ranger from the Maine Forest Service Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to witness a demonstration and display of the tools of their trade at the Maine Wildlife Park, 56 Game Farm Road, Route 26. Forest Rangers protect our forests, properties and homes from fires, insects, disease and misuse, and this is an opportunity to inspect a ranger truck loaded with 1500 pounds of fire equipment and initial response gear.
A special photo opportunity for the kids is scheduled from noon to 12:30 p.m., when Smokey Bear will arrive to meet and greet his fans. Bring your cameras for photos of Smokey with your children! This is a great day to learn about Maine’s forests!
The Maine Nordmenn also will be on hand for visitors to learn about Scandinavian climate, wildlife and conservation practices so similar to Maine’s. Observe Scandinavian culture from folks in full native dress; see demonstrations of traditional activities like wood carving, “rosemaling,” weaving and Viking life. You’ll even be able to view and photograph a 15 foot-long Viking ship reproduction. Sample delicious Scandinavian foods and enjoy Scandinavian music. There will be a variety of age appropriate activities for children, as well as Scandinavian baked goods and crafts for sale.
The Maine Wildlife Park is owned and operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It exists to promote an understanding and awareness of the wildlife, conservation and habitat protection programs and projects of MDIFW.
The park has over 30 species of native wildlife on display, plus wildlife gardens, nature trails, a fish hatchery and other interactive exhibits and displays. The park is open daily from April 15 through November 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; visitors may then stay until 6 p.m.
Admission to the park is free for ages 3 and under; $5.50 ages 4-12; $7.50 for adults, and $5.50 for seniors. Groups of 15 or more are $3.50 per person. Bring a picnic and spend the day! Family and Community Season passes are available, and are an incredible bargain for families and groups that visit the park several times over the course of the summer.
