LEWISTON – Nominations for the 2017 Amanda Dempsey Award presented by Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer will be accepted through Aug. 14. The award is presented to a cancer survivor who has a passion for helping Mainers with cancer.
The recipient will be honored during Dempsey Challenge weekend, Oct. 7 and 8, at Simard-Payne Park in Lewiston. That Saturday, the winner will lead the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk, along with actor and Lewiston native Patrick Dempsey and his family, and will also be honored at the Champions for Hope Celebration that same evening. Amanda Demsey, Dempsey’s mother, was reserved and humble, but she had a warm presence, and was passionate about giving back to her community, said a news release from the organization.
Nominees must be a cancer survivor, must demonstrate a passion for helping and inspiring others diagnosed with cancer and must live in and or help others in Maine. Past winners are Brooke Ismail (2016), James Campbell (2015) and Nel Bernard (2014).

Founded in 2005 Amgen, Breakaway from Cancer is a national initiative to increase awareness of important resources available to people affected by cancer, from prevention through survivorship. Breakaway from Cancer represents a partnership between Amgen andnonprofit organizations Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community, Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
The Dempsey Challenge is a two-day, non-competitive fundraiser that champions the spirit of celebration and culture of paying it forward, all hosted in Patrick Dempsey’s hometown of Lewiston.
