May is National Fitness Month

By Jodi Cornelio

TURNER – Has the long winter got you in a routine of shutting down after dinner, curling up in front of the television by 6 p.m. and spending the rest of the night on the sofa? Make May the month to get up and move.

Bad habits are easy to create when the weather prevents you from getting outside. We all need physical activity, and people of all ages and body types can be physically active. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great time to focus on increasing your activity. How perfect is that after a long winter in Maine?

Children, adults and seniors benefit from physical activity in numerous ways. Being fit and getting as much physical activity as you can squeeze in during the day increases, heart health and bone and muscular health and development. It also improves balance for fall prevention in all of us, not just for seniors.

Physical activity helps in weight control and makes you more alert mentally. Did you know that being physically fit and regularly active increases your chances of living longer and reduces your risk for some diseases?

Turner Publishing, Inc. is supporting the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition in honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. During the month of May, we challenge all adults to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,, the physical activity guidelines for Americans recommend that adults:

• Aim for two hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves.

• Do muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or using exercise bands – at least two days a week.

Physical activity is for everyone. No matter what shape you are in, you can find activities that work for you. Together, we can rise to the challenge and get more active during the month of May!

Live Long, Live Well.
