LEWISTON — The Maine Department of Transportation is currently working on the final design for bridge painting activities for 2017. Bid requests have been advertised, and painting is scheduled to get underway in May and last through Nov. 17. The project includes painting the Auburn-Lewiston Vietnam Memorial Bridge over the Androscoggin River and Lewiston’s ramps A and D over Maine Central Rail Road tracks.
According to a letter sent by Devin Anderson, senior project manager for the state’s bridge program, traffic will be maintained using single-lane closures on river bridges and shoulder closures on ramp bridges while installing and removing containment and staging, the installation of which will be allowed from 8 p.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday.
Police officers will be used to help with set-up and removal of traffic control devices when lanes or shoulders are shut down, he continued. No equipment will be allowed in the roadway other than for the purpose of installing containment and staging. Painting and other work activities will be done from underneath the bridges.
The contractor will be allowed to reduce North River Road in Auburn to one lane of alternating traffic with a traffic signal in order to stage the equipment for painting the Lewiston-Auburn bridge. Staging for the Lewiston ramp bridges will take place beside the MCRR tracks.
