RUMFORD — When an organization reaches its 100th birthday, its time for a little bit of recognition. This year, River Vally Rotary Club of the Greater Rumford Area membership took up a collection at its Fellowship luncheon March 13 and raised more than $700 for the Rotary Foundation, noted Kalyan Banerjee, Foundation trustee chair.
In March, local Rotarians observed Water and Sanitation Month. These projects provide millions of people with access to clean water and adequate sanitation facilities. This area of focus has long been high on many Rotarian service agendas, and for good reason – 663 million people do not have access to clean water, and one-third of the worlds population liive without access to a toilet, Banerjee pointed out.
“Our efforts in providing clean water have far-reaching effects,” she writes. An estimated 10,000 clubs participate in water- and sanitation-related projects. The Rotary Foundation provided $19 million in global grants in 2015-2016. Also during that time, the Foundation provided $76 million for all global grants, which also fight diseases, save mothers and children, promote peace, support education and provide economic opportunities to many people worldwide.
