MAINE – The Trek Across Maine is gearing up for its 33rd edition, which will be held June 16-18, with a 97-mile option for those who can’t complete the entire 180-mile, three-day bicycle trip.
The Trek, which raises money for the American Lung Association, begins in the mountains at Sunday River end ends in Belfast, at the edge of the Atlantic. Some 2,000 cyclists and 700 volunteers are expected to participate in the fully supported charity ride. Organizers are seeking both riders and volunteers for the Fathers Day weekend event.
Cyclists 7 years old and up are welcome to join. Matthew St. Cyr, who has ridden in the Trek seven times, remembered when he decided to do it with his daughters, Maisy, 11, and Rosie, 9. “I did the trek several times before the era of kids, and took some time off for all of the obvious reasons,” he said. “When Maisy was 8 we decided on the way home from a ski trip to do the Trek on a borrowed tandem. All down hill from there! The other kids wanted to hop in as well. The bike got longer as the kids got taller and it is without hesitation one of our favorite weekends of the year.”
The Trek Across Maine is fully supported by volunteers and trained medical staff, including support vehicles along the route and three rest stops daily, organizers said in the a news release. The Trek “is always looking for volunteers to help us support the Trek Across Maine,” the release said. Volunteers can participate for an hour, or for the entire weekend, and opportunities involve handing out food and water at rest stops, directing cyclists along the route and cheering at the finish line. “Our volunteers have just as much fun as the Trekkers,” the release said.
