Workshop will focus on integrating science education into the classroom

AUGUSTA — Kate Cook Whitt, an assistant professor of education at Thomas College in Waterville, will be the keynote presenter at “Integrating Science in the Curriculum,” a workshop sponsored by GAMMA Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Whitt’s areas of interest include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), science education and teacher education, and she is committed to supporting teachers and schools in employing innovative teaching and learning strategies, particularly in science, according to a news release from GAMMA.

Whitt’s presentation will be on “Phenomenon Based Science: From ‘Learning About’ to ‘Figuring Out’,”  and will help participants learn to integrate phenomenon-based science into the classroom, the release said.

The workshop will also include break-out sessions on “Science: Primary Kids Need It, Too!” with Laurette Darling; “This Is for the Birds: A Unifying Theme to Integrating Science into Your Curriculum” with Sharon Gallant; and “Sparking Curiosity — Bringing Science Alive in the K Classroom” with Brandi Grady.

The workshop will be held from 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, April 1, at the Viles Estate at 71 Stone St. It is open to the public and has a registration fee of $10, $5 for students. To register or for more information, email dkggamma1@gmail.com;or call 485-5300.
