RUMFORD — It all started this year when Barbara Tidswell of Rumford called my office to donate a bag of clean towels for a needy family. I knew just the place to take them, the Rumford Group Home, which accepted them gratefully.
I asked if they still had the Christmas tree donated from Walmart two years ago and they answered yes. I asked if they had many in the shelter this year and was surprised when they said “Yes. We have two homes now with seven homeless families with 12 children under the age of 12.”
This flabbergasted me, so I thought about this and decided to post it to Facebook.
In the spirit of Christmas, this year there is a great need by the Rumford Group Home who now have two homes for the homeless to care for. These homes are for those families who have lost their own home through hard times and the Rumford Group Home provides temporary shelter for approximately three months or until such families get back on their feet. They are not career welfare folks.
I dropped off towels donated by a town resident the other day and spoke with the administrator who told me this year they have seven families with a total of 12 children under the age of 12.
I wish you could see how a gesture of donating gifts and other items raised five family spirits last year. It warmed my heart. I saw it first hand. It is a humbling experience for the parents who have normally provided for their family, but because of hard times cannot.

Though we all may not have much, we have more than some others. I know I give, not because I have much, but rather because I know what it is like to have nothing.
