Scott Howard Sr.
1938 – 2016
MERCER — On Dec. 9, Scott Howard Sr.’s last day on this earth was spent doing what he loved most.
His morning was filled with running his bulldozer, then running for truck parts. Early in the afternoon, he was at his garage with two of his grandsons. After returning home for the day, he loaded the wheelbarrow with firewood, brought it in the house and sat down. His hat and boots were still on.
Scott was born Dec. 3, 1938, to Helen Sawyer and Maurice Howard in Monmouth. Scott had two older siblings, Marlene and Eugene. He was raised and educated in Clinton.
At 17, Scott left home and joined the Marines. Following his training at Paris Island, he was stationed in California then Japan. In April of 1960, Scott came home and married his sweetheart, Martha Cushman.
They spent their first months in South Carolina before coming home to Maine. They bought a home in Mercer, and this town became Scott’s world. He never traveled again.
Anyone who knew Scott knew that work was his passion. He bore the workaholic title with quiet satisfaction. A day of work was a day of play for him. Scott held many jobs, but was happiest being his own boss. He cut wood, sold cattle, and built his earthwork business, Mercer Sand and Gravel. He also loved the local store. At a time when it looked like there wouldn’t be a store in town, he opened up his own. Scott spent many hours at the store, “talking to the girls,” conducting business and keeping up with town politics.
Along with Martha, his wife of 56 years, he leaves his four children, Emily (Turk) and her husband, Mark, Scott II “Donnie” and his wife, Julia, Warren and his wife, Angela, and Rachel Quirion. With the arrival of grandchildren, he became known as “Beepa,” “Beep” and “Gramps.” His presence will be greatly missed by nine grandchildren, Sandra Jean (Mendoza) and her husband, Andres, Ephraim and his wife, Michelle, Scott III, Alexa (Jackman) and her husband, Craig, Sam and his soulmate, Lorri, Nakita, Tucker, Garret and Shelby. He also was blessed with seven great-grandchildren, Sarah, Dominic, Sylas, Sebastian, Sophia, Scotlynn and Connor.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the worthy student fund at Riverview Memorial School, 201 Mercer Road, Norridgewock. Arrangements by Dan & Scott’s Cremation & Funeral Service, Skowhegan.
