WATERVILLE — The Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers has received an outpouring of support after recent media coverage highlighted the lack of donations for the agency’s annual Christmas Program. Each year, the program provides new clothing, books and gifts to more than 1,700 financially disadvantaged children across Maine.
On Tuesday, Fairfield Center Trucking Co. donated $10,000 to the Christmas program. The check was presented by owner Mike Dostie to Maine Children’s Home Executive Director Rick Dorian and Development Director Steve Mayberry.
In the week following Thanksgiving, the Christmas Program’s lack of donations was featured on Maine’s four major television stations, in several print articles and on the radio. The attention the coverage drew resulted in a wide range of donations, including new toys, books and clothing and cash donations. The support prompted enough inventory to complete the Christmas Program packing successfully. The distribution of the boxes to the families will be complete in the next week and in time for the holiday.
“The ongoing dilemma is that our donated Christmas program inventory runs out faster than new donations arrive. There is always a period of time that we struggle to keep enough inventory on hand to keep our packing process moving forward,” said Cristen Sawyer, Maine Children’s Home’s Christmas Program director. “We are so grateful to the community, both near and far, that helped make 1,700 children’s Christmas morning brighter. Thank you!”
