WINTHROP — The Charles M. Bailey Public Library will host an open house on Saturday, Dec. 3, to celebrate the library’s 100th anniversary. 
The morning will feature an hour-long children’s party beginning at 10:30 a.m. and hosted by the Winthrop Grade School fourth-graders. At 12:30 p.m. the library trustees and staff will host an all-ages open house, which will feature brief talks from town officials and a performance by the Winthrop Area Hand Bell Ringers.
On display will be photographs and newspaper clippings from the first 100 years of library service. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day. All of the day’s programs, which will take place on the first-floor King Event Room, are free and open to the public.
The Bailey Library first opened its doors on Bowdoin Street on Dec. 2, 1916. Charles M. Bailey, who owned one of the largest oilcloth manufacturers in America at the time, donated the rock-faced and chiseled-granite building. Previously, the library operated as the Winthrop Public Library, which opened in 1889 in the historic downtown Packard Block building. The library was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and expanded in 2015.
