Belfast – Two Maine Songwriters Collaborate on Original Bluegrass Recording Project

Sep. 302026

Belfast, MAINE – Belfast-based, independent musical act Sara Trunzo and her Maine Band releases a double-single, Crabapple: Songs of Evan Richert, which is now available everywhere you can stream digital music.

Crabapple: Songs of Evan Richert is a collaborative project bridging two generations of Maine songwriters connected by writing that expresses Maine’s sense of place, urgent ecological conscience, and grounding in community. Songwriter Evan Richert is one of the most highly recognized city planners in the state of Maine, who has been honing his bluegrass writing gifts in retirement.

Sara Trunzo, an award-winning songwriter and community organizer, shaped this double-single project as producer and vocalist– lending her emerging producing skills and her hot bluegrass band.

“Crabapple” is a celebration of the northern seasons and the abundance of Mother Nature through a singular crabapple tree. “Oil & Coal” was written following COP26’s failure to unify the globe around meaningful climate change mitigation goals in 2021. (COP stands for Conference of the Parties, a gathering of countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a treaty agreed in 1994.)

Songwriter Evan Richert, based in Brewer, writes in a folk-and-bluegrass tradition. His songs focus especially on the wisdom and power of nature and of the unnamed people who make communities work. His song “On a Bluegrass Breeze” was one of the winners in the 2025 Podunk Bluegrass festival. With Grammy nominated Rick Lang he wrote “Great Stone Face,” the story of the collapse of the iconic geologic formation in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. It became the theme song for the state’s 20th anniversary commemoration of the collapse.
Sara Trunzo is an independent singer-songwriter, producer, community organizer, and co-founder of Maine-based food security organizations: Veggies For All and. Informed by rural living, working class values, and history of activism, Trunzo writes what Adobe and Teardrops called “political country music at its finest.” Her 2019 “Food and Medicine” reached #3 on the Folk Alliance International radio chart. She has collaborated with Darrell Scott and Mary Gauthier; shared stages with the likes of Suzy Bogguss, Malcolm Holcombe, and Carlene Carter; played venues such as The Bluebird, Rockwood Music Hall, Club Passim, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. She has been a Joseph A. Fiore fellow, Music to Life juried artist, and has received honors from Maine Songwriters Association, International Acoustic Music Awards, New England Songwriting Competition, Tennessee Songwriters’ Week, and Hazel Dickens Songwriting Contest. She is a volunteer board member of WERU Community Radio, Documentary Songwriters, and Maine Songwriters Association. Her 4th record, Better Than I Was, came out in June 2025 and reached #16 on the Folk Alliance International radio chart. She was the executive producer for another Maine songwriter’s work earlier this year: Skip Bailey’s Wildflower Bouquet, which came out in June 2026.
