My Navy Buddies Steve Saylor and his wife – Carol from Virginia decided to visit Maine for the first time. I haven’t seen them since my 4 year tour of duty in United States Navy. That was 1968 to 1971. My first tour of duty as a radioman was at NAVCONSTA MOROCCO located at Sidi Yahia which was a top secret Naval Base serving the Atlantic Fleet then. I left there in September 1970 which was the last time I saw Steve.
Steve and Carol arrived at the Portland International Airport, Monday evening, August 11, 2025. They came to Rumford Maine and stayed at the Swift River Suites for the first three nights and the Best Western Plus for their last night on August 15, 2025. During their visit, I was happy to show them the sites around the River Valley and we enjoyed visiting with family and friends. We had lunch at Dick’s Restaurant in Mexico and then off to Rangeley. Along the way we stopped at Coos Canyon, the Height of Land, had lunch at Furbish Brew House and Eats, then to Quill Hill for more sight seeing. We Traveled back through Kingfield, Strong, Farmington and Wilton Lake before ending back at the home front late that night. The following day was a day trip to Bar Harbor to enjoy the sites and lobster on the pier. We first stopped at Newport IHOP for breakfast then at Dysart’s Truck Stop – Hermon, Maine to pick up a souvenir cup for a friend of theirs that used to visit Hermon, Maine. We enjoyed Maine Spirits at the local Gaylen’s Seafood Restaurant where we met a local business man who shared a couple stories of his fishing trips with two men from the Rumford area, (Dick Therriault owner of Madison Motel and Attorney Paul Dumas, who happens to be my family Attorney), small world. We ended that the day with dinner at the Eagles Nest on the pier and enjoyed lobsters (the easy way, shelled and served) and desert of course. Mmmm
On Thursday we again enjoyed breakfast at Dick’s Restaurant Mexico, Maine and another day trip, this time to Five Islands on the pier at George Town, Maine, because they had another friend from Virginia who told them they had to go there, so naturally we went. We devoured more lobster but in the shell where we had to work for our meal. ” Messy but good!” What would Maine be without a visit to LL Bean in Freeport, which was out next stop. Unfortunately it was under renovation but we did enjoy shopping under the 3000 square foot tent and later more Maine spirits at the Tuscan Brick Oven where we also shared a delicious peanut butter cheese cake (3 forks please). Mmmm
We packed a lot into what seemed like a short trip when shared with old friends. It was hard to say goodbye to my old Navy Buddy, Steve and wife Carol. Safe travels and come back soon my friends to Maine’s Vacation Land.
