Salt & Light Community Center OPEN HOUSE – Sat. May 10, 10am-2pm

Apr. 302025

Here’s a story I think you’ll find hopeful and inspiring.

Darlene, a wife and mother, experienced an event in her life no parent ever wants to endure. Ten years ago, her first born son passed away from a drug overdose. Darlene knew the importance of ensuring a safe and loving space for children who are seeking support. She shared her vision with several individuals, created a board of directors and a solid plan to launch this mission for children in downtown Auburn. Salt & Light Community Center (S&L) was born in 2020.

S&L has operated in local public parks (outdoors!) for five years in an effort to meet children where they are. We show up in a park, lay out a couple of blankets, bring food and beverages, and talk to kids. It is with these conversations that we’ve been able to create programming specifically designed to support their needs. And, provide them with a place where hope begins for many children including a spark of love and a guiding hand.

A couple of years ago, the volume of kids we were seeing in the park was extraordinary. It became necessary to seek an indoor space suitable to support our newly created programs. Thankfully, we were provided with space in the fellowship hall of a church located precisely in the neighborhoods the kids lived in. This is where we could continue to provide a shining light for children who experience a life which feels dark and hopeless.

The S&L programs include afterschool support for younger kids, a youth group for teenagers, and a parental support group for grandparents and parents. We also host outdoor community events in the parks for families, free basketball and soccer clinics for kids, and dinners and neighborhood events during the holiday season. In addition, we work with children who are experiencing addiction, homelessness and human trafficking. Our outreach never stops because the need for connection and support is ever growing.

This past winter, the volume of kids grew exponentially, and we outgrew the space in the local church.

At the beginning of this year, S&L found a building for sale which perfectly suited our needs and it is located within the neighborhoods we serve. When we engaged a walk-thru of the building, it was even more evident that the building not only met our needs, but we were quick to envision the future needs of the neighborhood children could be fulfill within this building. We presented an offer to the seller who was entirely onboard with the S&L mission, and they accepted our offer.

The closing date is June 1, 2025. We are hosting an Open House so you can learn more about Salt & Light Community Center. Come and see this mission and help us make it come true!
