KVCAP annual golf tournament and silent auction to benefit Kennebec Explorer bus program

Jun. 112017

WATERVILLE — The Kennebec Valley Community Action Program’s annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction will be held on Thursday, June 29, at Lakewood Golf Course in Madison. All proceeds will support the Kennebec and Somerset Explorer public bus system.

Ridership of the bus system has reached capacity, and KVCAP must raise additional money to meet the ever-growing demand, according to a news release from KVCAP. In 2016, community members rode the Explorer buses 97,800 times — almost triple that of five years ago. Yet funding for the service has not increased at the same rate as the demand, KVCAP officials said.

The organization must raise more money in order to stabilize and maintain the current Explorer routes and consider future expansion options, including commuter service between Skowhegan and Waterville. Without the funding, KVCAP may have to cut routes, which would have a severe impact on the people who depend on the bus to get to work, school, appointments, shopping and more, the organization said. “The good news is that federal funding for public transportation matches our private donations dollar for dollar, literally doubling the impact of the money raised through this event,” they said.

Reliable, affordable public transportation creates positive economic, social, and environmental impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Public support will energize our communities by increasing access to education, employment and personal buying power. Studies show that for every dollar invested in public transportation, four dollars is returned in economic earnings, the release said.

The fee for the golf tournament is $100 per player, $400 for a foursome, and includes green fees and carts, a light breakfast and a luncheon buffet, mulligans and strings, goody bags, and the opportunity to win prizes and bid on auction items.
