AUBURN – The second production of Community Little Theatre’s 83rd season will open April 20 with the musical “Little Women.”
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 semi-autobiographical novel, and with a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland, this musical has been praised by critics for its ambition in adapting such a well-known story for the stage. It opened on Broadway in 2005 with a cast featuring Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern. Foster earned Tony, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk nominations for her performance.
At its core, Little Women is about family, following your dreams, and listening to your heart. The story follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March.
“A step back in time to Civil War era New England, Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit,” director Brandon Chaloux said.
The four March sisters are played by Janelle Raven as Jo, Maria Groover as Amy, Casey Griffin as Beth, and Karianna Merrill as Meg. Other cast members include Bee Tyle as Marmee March, Justin Morin as Mr. John Brooke, Ethan Rombalski as Laurie Laurence, L. John Van Norden as Mr. Laurence, Edward Angelo as Professor Bhaer, and Jennifer Groover as Aunt March.
Besides Chaloux, the crew is led by music director Paul G. Caron, choreographer Jamie Watson, producer Jennifer Groover, and stage manager Sarah Chaloux.
“This show has been one of the most rewarding creative processes I have been a part of,” Chaloux added. “I really believe it will be a jewel in the crown for CLT.”
Little Women will be performed 7:30 p.m. on April 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29 and at 2 p.m. on April 23 and 30 at the theater, 30 Academy St.
