Capital Area Cub Scouts have a busy March

AUGUSTA – Scouts in the Capital Area were busy in March, as Augusta Pack 684’s Bear Den held its Bear Den Carnival, and Vassalboro Cub Back 410 held its annual Pinewood Derby.

The Bear Den Carnival was held March 13 at Fitzgerald-Cummings Post 2 American Legion post, with games and activities for kids old and young. The annual event is part of Pack 684 Bear Den’s Grin and Bear It elective adventure. The Scouts planned the carnival, invited parents and youth from their pack and then ran the program with the help of their parents. Scouts from Troop 631 were invited to have fun and help with the event. Activities included a toilet paper toss, ski ball on a homemade table, log balance challenge, air hockey using Tupperware and electric tape, corn hole, and more.
In Vassalboro, Pack 410 held the Pinewood Derby races on March 19 at Vassalboro Community School. Members of American Legion Post 126, including Post Commander Tom Richard and Adjutant Jim Kilbride, were on hand. The Legion is the chartered organization partner of the Scouting program. Each den, youth from the same grade in school, raced against each other. Winners from each den raced together to determine the overall pack winner. The winners represented Pack 410 at the Kennebec Valley District Pinewood Derby on April 1 in Gardiner.
Beckett Metcalf was the Tiger Cub Den (1st grade) winner and overall Pack 410 winner. Dominic Poulin, second grade, won the heats for the Wolf Cubs. Henry Gray took the top spot for the Bears (3rd graders), and William Vincent took the top prize for the Webelos (4th and 5th graders). Cubs are given a kit containing a block of wood, four nails and wheels. With the help of a parent or grandparent, they design and build their own pinewood derby car.
